About this species

Diet
Flowers, tubers, shoots, insects, molluscs and occasional small vertebrates
Range
Sulawesi, Indonesia

Heck’s macaque is an Old World monkey native to Sulawesi. The species account opened describes it as active by day and capable of climbing, but says that it spends most of its foraging time on the ground. The available account does not give dependable measurements or a detailed coat description, so those are omitted here. Its scientific and English names distinguish this macaque from the several other geographically restricted macaques found on different parts of Sulawesi (Wikipedia, general species account; Mammal Diversity Database).

Groups described in the available account contain 10–15 animals and range over roughly 100 hectares. Sexually mature males leave their birth groups and enter other groups, a dispersal pattern that reduces mating among close relatives. While searching on the ground, the macaques eat flowers, underground tubers, new shoots, insects and molluscs, with small vertebrates taken at times. These behavioural and dietary notes are species-wide rather than evidence for a particular viewing site in Sulawesi (Wikipedia, general species account).
