About this species

Range
North Sulawesi, centred west of the crested black macaque's range

The Gorontalo macaque is a dark Sulawesi monkey with a long, narrow crest and a projecting, baboon-like face. Its limbs are blackish and contrast with the browner trunk, while the bare sitting pads are grey. These traits help separate it from Heck's macaque to the west and the crested black macaque to the east, although identifying animals near contact zones requires care (Groves 2001; Plazi taxonomic treatment).

Its type locality is Gorontalo in northern Sulawesi. Field surveys found a roughly 30 km gap between Gorontalo and Heck's macaque populations, while the eastern boundary with crested black macaques was less clear and possible overlap or hybrid animals could not be confirmed. Later camera-trap work specifically investigated that boundary. The evidence describes scattered, isolated populations rather than mixed macaque communities at individual forest sites (Sugardjito et al. 1989; Zak and Riley 2017).
