About this species

Range
South Tapanuli, Sumatra (Batang Toru area)

The Tapanuli orangutan is a species of orangutan restricted to South Tapanuli on Sumatra. It is one of three known living orangutan species, alongside the Sumatran orangutan farther north-west on the island and the Bornean orangutan, and was described as a distinct species in 2017. There were roughly 800 individuals as of 2018 (Wikipedia, general species account).

In body build it resembles the Sumatran orangutan more than the Bornean orangutan (Wikipedia, general species account).
