The eastern black crested gibbon, also called the Cao-vit black crested gibbon or Cao-vit crested gibbon, is a gibbon of south-east China and northern Vietnam. The name 'Cao-vit' comes from the sound of the calls or songs, used by villagers of Ngoc Khe, Phong Nam and Ngoc Con communes of Trung Khanh District, Cao Bang Province (Wikipedia, general species account).
From the 1960s until the 2000s there were no confirmed sightings and it was thought possibly extinct. In 2002 a small population was rediscovered by two Fauna & Flora International biologists in a karst forest in Trung Khanh District, Cao Bang Province. The species was thought endemic to Vietnam until 2006, when it was also found in a small forest in Guangxi Province, China.
