The grey-cheeked flying squirrel was described in 1822 and is known from peninsular Thailand, Malaysia, Sumatra, Java and Borneo. Phylogenetic evidence indicates that it is the same species as the arrow flying squirrel, Hylopetes sagitta, which is nocturnal and arboreal, may be found in primary and secondary forest, and is threatened by forest loss due to logging and agriculture (Wikipedia, general species account).
