It is an uncommon species of lowland and lower montane forest, and in Thailand it is found in the south (Ecology Asia species account).

It roosts by day in colonies in dark rock crevices and quiet caves. It feeds mainly on fruit, often flying away from the fruiting tree to eat, though many individuals carry food back to the cave roost (Ecology Asia species account).
