About this species
- Range
- Sulawesi, the Moluccas, New Guinea and the Solomon Islands
The black sheath-tailed bat, Mosia nigrescens, is a sac-winged bat and the only living species placed in the genus Mosia. The alternative English name lesser sheath-tailed bat is also used by government species catalogues. Its generic isolation is taxonomically useful: unlike a name borrowed from a broad species complex, Mosia nigrescens denotes a distinct monotypic lineage within the emballonurid bats (U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service; ITIS).
Collection and catalogue records give it a broad island distribution from Sulawesi and Buton through the Sula and northern Moluccan islands to New Guinea and the Solomon Islands. The sources opened for this account contained reliable taxonomy and distribution but not enough directly supported species-level information on diet, roost structure or reproduction. Those details are therefore omitted rather than borrowed from other sheath-tailed bats, whose natural histories may differ (U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service; Mammal Diversity Database).
