The lesser short-tailed bat is an endemic forest bat with unusually terrestrial habits. It is the only surviving member of its genus. It has thick grey-brown fur, pointed ears and a short tail. Adults generally weigh 12–15 grams and have strong limbs for moving across the forest floor.

It survives in several separated old-growth forests on the North Island. Strongholds include Pureora, Whirinaki, Rangataua and northern Te Urewera. It forages in flight and on the ground, folding its wings while scrambling through leaf litter. Food includes insects, fruit, nectar and pollen.

The species is Declining under the NZTCS. Predators and loss of large roost trees are major threats. Public sightings are difficult, but conservation programmes operate in Pureora and Whirinaki. Visitors must not disturb marked roost trees.
