About this species
- Habitat
- Taiga, mountain forest, mixed forest, and deciduous forest
- Range
- Southern Siberia and adjoining East Asia, including central Asia
Ognev's long-eared bat belongs to the diverse Plecotus auritus species complex and was recognised as a separate species by 2006. Its exceptionally long ears are obvious at rest when extended, but members of the complex are difficult to distinguish by casual observation. The name Plecotus ognevi should therefore be applied cautiously to older records that predate the genetic and morphological revision. (Spitzenberger et al. 2006; Wikipedia, general species account)
Its documented range includes southern Siberia, eastern Kazakhstan, central Asia, China, and the Korean Peninsula. Records come from taiga, southern Siberian mountain forest, temperate mixed forest, and temperate deciduous forest and other wooded landscapes. This contrasts ecologically with Kozlov's long-eared bat of central Asian steppe-desert. The opened species account did not provide measurements, diet, breeding data, roost details, or a dependable central Asian viewing locality. (Wikipedia, general species account)
