- Range
- Endemic to Sumatra (Barisan Range)
The Sumatran hog badger is the smallest of the hog badgers (genus Arctonyx), about the size of a large housecat. Its fur is sparser and much darker than in the other two species, suited to equatorial forest, and it has the hog-like snout that gives the group its name. The long, fairly sharp claws curve downwards, like those of a sun bear, and are well adapted for digging and foraging (Wikipedia, general species account).
It is endemic to Sumatra, where it lives in the high-altitude regions of the Barisan Range that runs along the island, from foothills beginning at about 700 m up to the very highest areas. It shares its range with the sun bear (Wikipedia, general species account).
