Mammals of the World

Mammals of the World: A Photo Database of Every Mammal Species

Mammals are far more diverse than most people realize. Scientists currently recognize roughly 6,871 living species, grouped into about 27 orders and 167 families — from bats (Chiroptera) and rodents (Rodentia), the two largest orders by far, to small, specialized groups like pangolins (Pholidota) and aardvarks (Tubulidentata). Each family shares a distinct evolutionary history, from whales and dolphins (Cetacea) to primates, carnivores, and marsupials, and new species are still being described every year.

This site exists to build a free, open, photo-referenced database of that diversity. We're using it as the reference library for a mammal identification field guide app — the more species that have verified photos attached, the better that app can recognize mammals from a photo in the field. Browse the full species list below, search by common name, scientific name, order, family, or genus, and if you have a photo of a mammal you've encountered, upload it to help fill in the gaps.
